Join Aquarium Teen Program Coordinator Liz Whitlinger and campers with the Harbor Discoveries Schooner Adventure Camp as they blog from the high seas. After a week of preparation, our crew of young explorers board a Grand Banks schooner and set sail for a five-day, four-night excursion exploring Massachusetts Bay.
On Monday we were introduced to a group of total strangers that we would live with on the schooner next week. Friendships quickly formed on our trip to Spectacle Island. We learned about the history of Spectacle, the various reincarnations as a summer home for local tribes, a colonial trash heap, a refinery for dead horses and most recently as the home of the dirt from the Big Dig.
After the dirt was moved there trees and shrubs were planted. Later at the highest point on the island, of all of Boston Harbor actually, we attempted some orienteering with mixed success.
We then returned to the Aquarium after a wonderful day of exploration.
